Diesel Technology Program Sponsors Family for Christmas

Andy King doesn’t show too much compassion throughout the year, but when the holidays roll around, the Diesel Technology instructor softens up. He said his goal this year, and hopefully in the future, is to sponsor a family in need in the Head Start preschool class offered at Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology.

So when he heard Early Childhood Education instructor Erin Gearhart was spearheading a campaign to help those children in need, King and adult students in his post-secondary program jumped on board.

“I checked with these guys and asked what they think about it and said they’d give a couple bucks, and with 25 guys, a couple bucks each can go a long way,” King said. “But it went beyond that. They started asking family members and friends, and started coming in with like $100 (to) $150, and ended up with about $750 when it was all said and done.”

The money raised helped support a single mother and her two sons, a 5-year-old and 9-month-old. A list of the family’s needs and wants got back to King and his team, and on Dec. 19, the group shopped for items on the list, and more.

“We went overboard,” King said with a laugh. “We ended up going about $250 more than what we actually had, but it was nothing.”

They purchased clothes and some other essentials for the boys, and also bought age-appropriate toys, including a skateboard and all the safety equipment for the older brother. The mother apparently didn’t ask for anything for herself, but students in the program pitched in to get her a $200 Walmart gift card.

“We were just looking to brighten up someone’s holiday,” King said. “If we can give a little bit extra this time of year and make them happy, then that’s what we want to do. I tell my guys you won’t see much compassion out of me, but you will this time of year.”

King’s goal is to sponsor a family every year during Christmas time.
