HVAC Program Teams up with Industry Leaders to Promote Careers

Instructor Ken Hassinger has industry representatives come to his HVAC-R program at Central Pennsylvania Science and Technology as a way to help gain employment for secondary and post-secondary students. It also has the potential to benefit employers with well-trained workers.

Construction supervisor Shaun Custer from the Lewistown-based Robert Johnson Plumbing & Heating was on hand Dec. 13 to promote the company he works for, and help recruit students to apply for jobs. After all, he said there is a “worker shortage” in the heating and plumbing business.

“It’s not just with Robert Johnson, but we talk to competitors who are having this problem,” Custer said. “Right now, our youngest guy is about to turn 30, so coming in here is a good recruitment tool.”

He spent more than an hour with 12 high school seniors and 18 adult students discussing employment opportunities, engaging in a question-and-answer session, and handing out applications. What Custer said he’s looking for most are future employees who show up to work on time, are dependable and honest, and show pride in their work.

“Sometimes that’s the link that’s missing,” he said. “There are buildings I drive by in State College or Lewistown and still say, ‘I did that’.”

And for adult student Maclean Smith, of Aaronsburg, having the chance to learn about employment opportunities is priceless.

“There’s nothing better; you can’t put a price that,” he said.
